Well we are half way through the district schedule and so far we have managed to win the first four games. All opponents have demonstrated competitiveness and the bottom half of the schedule will not be easy.
Although, we defeated Haysi by a lot at home, I know that it will be a different story when we travel to Sandlick. Coach Compton will have his team ready and we expect nothing short of a dog fight. Council has proven to be a very worthy opponent and our first game against them proved that the Cobras are a force to be reckoned with in the BDD. Big Otto has improved drastically and his teammates understand what they need to do to win games. Honaker has a young squad but they proved in the first half against us that they are capable of beating anyone on any given night. They recently lost to a very good Lebanon squad by only 5 points, I have seen Lebanon play and that is in itself a huge credit to the ability of Coach Harts squad.
Hurley has got to be one of the better teams around SWVA and I firmly believe that Coach Cooper will have them playing their best ball by seasons end, just in time for tournament play.
On a rather sad note, Coach Cooper recently lost his father Teddy Cooper. I know that Teddy was the anchor of that family and that Mark, Connie, the boys and especially "Tiny," will be hurting something terrible in the days and weeks to come. I encourage everyone to remember the family and the whole Rebel community in their prayers. Teddy was a huge supporter of Hurley Rebel athletics and he could be seen at just about every function, game or event held within the area, he was a devoted father, husband and church member and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
On a final note the Bristol Herald Courier did a wonderful piece on Josh Keen and the Buchanan Basketball Foundation. You can check out the article by visiting the link below.
